The Department of Law at Shih Chien University, in line with the educational philosophy of its founder, Vice President Tung-Min Shieh, and to enhance the academic reputation of the department, has organized the " Vice President Tung-Min Shieh Memorial Distinguished Lecture Master Speaker Series " This event invites legal experts from both domestic and international backgrounds to deliver specialized lectures. The event is co-hosted with the International Artificial Intelligence and Law Research Foundation.

From September 15th to September 26th of the year 2023, Professor Viola Schmid from Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany was invited to conduct a series of specialized lectures.

Since 2020, Professor Viola Schmid has been dedicated to researching artificial intelligence law and conceptualizing whether there is a need for a legal system in the age of artificial intelligence. She introduced the concept of " Weltrecht^2," derived from mathematical equations, where World Law represents various legal systems worldwide, and the world of law encompasses human and artificial intelligence (AI) entities. The multiplication of these two factors results in the square of world law. We are honored to have her share her expertise and insights with us at Shih Chien University.

Professor Viola Schmid is a renowned legal expert from Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany, known for her outstanding contributions to traditional constitutional law, internet law, and artificial intelligence law. Her research accomplishments and academic contributions have received international acclaim and have had a profound impact on the field of law.

The first lecture, held on September 19th, 2023, had Chairman Mung-Shiung Shieh of Shih Chien University as the opening guest of honor. It was introduced by the Chair of the Department of Law Chung-Yuan Jiang at Shih Chien University. Notable attendees included Prosecutor Zhao-Yang Huang from the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office and Professor Yu-Wen Huang from the Department of Law at Shih Chien University. Participants in the lecture included not only Shih Chien University students but also faculty and graduate students from the College of Law at National Chengchi University, the College of Law at Shih Hsin University, and Taipei City University.

The lecture was conducted entirely in German, and Professor Ming-Hsin Lin from the College of Law at National Taiwan University served as the host of the lecture, with Chair Professor Li-Ching Chang providing simultaneous translation. Chairman Mung-Shiung Shieh emphasized the crucial role of the rule of law in the country's development, particularly in this era of rapid technological advancement, where the law must keep pace. He expressed his delight in inviting Professor Viola Schmid to exchange ideas, hoping it would contribute to the development of the rule of law in Taiwan.

During his address, the Chair of the Department of Law Chung-Yuan Jiang extended special thanks to Chair Professor Li-Ching Chang for her meticulous arrangements and to Professor Schmid for her journey to share the latest developments in artificial intelligence law with the Department of Law at Shih Chien University. He believed that this event, which provides such a rich academic feast at the beginning of the semester, would significantly enhance the professional knowledge and capabilities of the faculty and students in the Department of Law.

Professor Ming-Hsin Lin from the College of Law at National Taiwan University served as the host and moderator of the lecture

During Professor Viola Schmid's lecture, both the attending students and faculty were highly engaged, paying close attention and diligently taking notes. During the comprehensive discussion session, they raised numerous questions and engaged in dialogue with Professor Schmid. The questions spanned topics that Professor Schmid mentioned during her lecture, such as the relationship between innovation rights and the law, as well as European regulations on cryptocurrency.

Professor Schmid expressed her profound appreciation for the students' unwavering focus and their active participation in asking questions. She recognized and praised their enthusiasm for the subject matter.

In the comprehensive discussion segment, Chairman Mung-Shiung Shieh and Prosecutor Zhao-Yang Huang provided comments on innovation, reform, evolution, and the concept of " Weltrecht^2" They expressed admiration for Professor Schmid's innovative ideas and looked forward to her forthcoming book on " Weltrecht^2"
